about big winter

Daniel Hernandez : Piano
Dave Bennett : Vocals, Bass
Jam Nawaz : Vocals, Guitar
Luke Fraser : Drums

Melbourne's indie rock band Big Winter launched their debut EP Small Things in May 2015 with a hometown show at the Grace Darling.

Engineered and produced by the band's front man, Jam Nawaz, the release showcases the band's broad, tight, energetic range and live talents. The concept was to record each element live, organically and acoustically. The recording process took place in a variety of interesting places all around town. The band recorded drums, bass, guitar and vocals in an empty office in Port Melbourne, avoiding noise complaints by only recording whilst the neighbours were out. Friends who are string players that perform alongside the Australian Ballet were called upon for a recording session in a kitchen, and the favours continued when the band managed to borrow a vintage 1970's Rhodes Piano for the sessions.

The four-piece, Big Winter, is made up of a writer, a teacher, a student and a traveling musician. Long-time friends Jam Nawaz and Dave Bennett came together after many years of playing in separate bands. Dan Hernandez, a former pupil of Dave's with incredible talent soon joined and nomadic musician Luke Fraser completed the group in late 2014 after returning from touring Europe.

Each member of Big Winter bring their own musical flavour to the fold, from introspective piano to roaring, wall-of-sound prog. The result is a diverse repertoire of songs exploring stories of travel, reflection, love and loss.
